About the City
Providence is the capital and largest city of Rhode Island, the smallest state in the U.S. Founded in 1636 by Roger Williams as a haven for religious freedom, it is one of the oldest cities in the country.
Today it's known for its colonial architecture, its universities (Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design), a lively arts scene, and some of the best food in New England.
